"Old coot!" Hailey whispered to Charlie. "She's such a hypocrite." Charlie nodded, but Hailey could tell that his mind was busy with other things."Do you have a plan to get us out of here?"
This time, Charlie looked knowingly at her as he nodded. He turned to the Japanese woman, bowed slightly, and asked quite loudly, "Ma'am, do Japanese people have the courage of their convictions?"
The woman's face registered surprise, but she answered quietly, "Yes, of course."
"How do they show courage of convictions?" Charlie pursued. "Do they show it by making prisoners of innocent teenagers?"
The woman, puzzled at this question, replied, "It is necessary. You know too much."
"That is not your conviction, though, is it?" Charlie said. "You are listening to the old man. You are doing what he tells you to do, not what you think is right. You are going aginst your convictions, aren't you?"
