Date with Responsibility is essential for everyone working with teens: parents, teachers, and youth workers! The role model, a seventeen-year old homecoming queen, experiences life-shattering trauma and shares it with the reader, not sermonizing, but allowing other teens to see how she developed responsibility through it all. Captivating teens, this book convinces in clear, but subtle terms that responsibility is a critical character trait.
 |
Date with Responsibility grabs readers and plunges them into the life-and-death struggle of Valeta — a 17-year old beauty queen, who once fought nothing worse than a broken fingernail, or a zit on the end of her tiny nose. All of that changes now, as violent crime forces the cutest, most popular girl in the senior class to make a life-changing decision — and then learn responsibility the hard way.
This teen book is fiction — exciting fiction — but it draws its events and unobtrusively written lessons from the shattering experience of a real teen, with whom the author is personally acquainted. |
And it all began with a kiss.
EXCERPT
"You always remember your first kiss."
Valeta hurled the magazine at the bedroom door and rolled onto her back with fresh tears.
Her first kiss was not the problem! She had initiated the first kiss — that day in kindergarten when Jimmy had looked so cute playing on the computer — she had planted a juicy one right on his lips. Jimmy immediately reported this brazen breach of the "personal space rule" to the teacher, of course, and Valeta had been confined to a lonely blue corner for ten minutes. It was a small price to pay for a kiss, in those untroubled days when love consisted of sharing the longest red crayon or a pair of orange-handled scissors.
No, her first kiss was not Valeta's problem. It was her first adult kiss — that kiss on the beach last night — that had sprung the lid of Pandora's disaster-filled box.
At sunrise the previous day, Sunday of that last week in February, Valeta awakened with a smile on her perfectly rounded, promising lips. Her sea blue eyes sparkled as a prying sun ray lifted their lids, and she stretched in eager anticipation.
"Edwin's taking me to Senior Luau this evening,": she whispered to herself.
The nebulous sheer curtains at the window over her bed swayed, and the trade wind caught her whisper as it brushed her suntanned cheek with a most kiss. A moist kiss — not a wet kiss. The realization satisfied her. She wanted not the lightest of Hawaiian rains today.
Her mouth's full bow arched upward even farther, and she dared to peer directly into the face of the proud sun. "Ah yes, you look awesome in oranges and yellows," she told it, "but prepare to be jealous, dear sun, when you see my dress for tonight's luau. Everyone will be jealous!"
Valeta sprang her lithe body from the bed trappings, and beckoned to the sun as she flitted across the room to her open closet. "Behold and covet, my fiery friend. Tonight I shall be positively irresistible!"
She draped the long black dress in front of her petite body and gazed into the full mirror. He hair reflected the creamy yellow of the plumeria that adorned the black skirt, and she piled the golden tresses on top of her head. Dear Edwin. He would give her a yellow plumeria lei this evening, and it would be absolute perfection around the low-necked bodice. |
